Hear from our Nurse Practitioners | NP Week 2020

By The Family Health Clinic Team

To celebrate National Nurse Practitioners Week (November 8-14), we wanted to highlight our great Nurse Practitioners (NPs) by asking them fun questions about their position. Here’s what we asked everyone:

  • Why did you decide to become a Nurse Practitioner?
  • What advice would you give to a patient in the changing and challenging times of COVID?
  • How do you stay physically and mentally healthy during the winter?
  • How would you describe the Family Health Clinic in one word, and why did you choose that word?

As always, we’re grateful for the hard work and care that each of our Nurse Practitioners display daily. Get to know some our NPs better by reading through their responses below! If you want to schedule an appointment with one of them, you can be calling (800) 321-5043!

Why did you decide to become a Nurse Practitioner?

I always thought about it. When taking care of heart transplant patients, their visit to the cath lab was treated like a primary care visit, and I loved that they got everything they needed right there at that visit. All of the specialists came to them, labs completed, vaccines updated, ect. My dad had always wanted me to go back to school, and after he passed I used my inheritance to help pay for grad school.

What advice would you give to a patient in the changing and challenging times of COVID?

Wear a mask, wash your hands, take care of your mental health as well as your physical health.

How do you stay physically and mentally healthy during the winter?

I love to read. It is my biggest stress reliever and escape! I also have several house plants. It makes me feel good to care for them and watch them grow even though it is cold outside.

How would you describe the Family Health Clinic in one word, and why did you choose that word?

Community. We care for our patients and our communities.

I wanted to help women navigate through the changes and needs they would experience across their reproductive life spans.

What advice would you give to a patient in the changing and challenging times of COVID?

Try and remind yourself that all the effort you put into protecting yourself from COVID also helps you prevent others from becoming ill. Your actions make a difference 🙂

How do you stay physically and mentally healthy during the winter?

Meditate, walk, shut off social media for a while and focus on what is real around you.

How would you describe the Family Health Clinic in one word, and why did you choose that word?

Family. We are a “family” of coworkers working to keep our “patient families” well.

Why did you decide to become a Nurse Practitioner?

Once I decided to become an RN as a junior in high school, I knew I would be a Nurse Practitioner, that was my goal from the start.

What advice would you give to a patient in the changing and challenging times of COVID?

Stay informed, not by the news, but by reputable sources as CDC. This too shall pass, but if everyone does what they are supposed to do, fewer lives will be lost.

How do you stay physically and mentally healthy during the winter?

20 minutes exercise 3-4 times a week inside, since in the summer, most people have increased activity with outside jobs.

How would you describe Family Health Clinic in one word, and why did you choose that word?

Family. The clinic is concerned about all employees and patients as if it is one big family.

Why did you decide to become a Nurse Practitioner?

To prevent preventable illnesses in children by promoting health and wellness.

What advice would you give to a patient in the changing and challenging times of COVID?

Please wear your masks anytime you are around others that are not in your family – your masks are the main way we can keep the virus from spreading. Please wash your hands and avoid touching your face. Please stay home as much as you can to avoid spreading or catching the virus. It’s important to keep in touch with your loved ones and those who are in your life, so call, text, write a note, send an email.

How do you stay physically and mentally healthy during the winter?

I read books a lot and quilt. I spend time with my children and husband as well as my dogs. I watch the birds at my feeders that I feed through the winter and the deer that are always on my lawn. I enjoy winter as much as the other seasons!

How would you describe Family Health Clinic in one word, and why did you choose that word?

Exceptional. I think ALL our staff go above and beyond to help our patients and one another. They all show exceptional work ethics and teamwork. I think our patients are exceptional – they show such love, care, and regard for their families it is humbling. I think the care we provide is exceptional by keeping the patient as the focus and using the evidence research has provided us as guides. Exceptional.
