By The Family Health Clinic Team

This October, we’re spotlighting Yadira Santiago Banuelos, our new Family Nurse Practitioner! Get to know her better by reading about her previous education, work experience, and our interview with her.

Yadira’s Education and Work Experience

  • Grew in Lafayette and attended Lafayette Jefferson High School.
  • Attended Purdue University for nursing school, her senior year was her first experience with the Family Health Clinic during her capstone rotation with Liz O’Neil.
  • Obtained her masters from Purdue as well and also had the opportunity to teach as a TA throughout school. She had fallen in love with the Family Health Clinic the first time and returned back to the Monon clinic to perform some more of my clinical hours.

A Conversation With Yadira

What drew you to the Family Health Clinic?

Our mission! I truly love the fact that we see ALL patients.

My love for the clinic started as a student. I immediately loved how welcoming everyone was and the fact that they never made me feel like there was any dumb questions. Everyone was always so supportive and helpful.

I also love how connected we are with the Purdue School of Nursing. I have a very strong passion for education, so this is a great way to combine both precepting students and seeing patients.

What are you most looking forward to about working at The Family Health Clinic?

I look forward to seeing families! I love being able to get to know the WHOLE family and care for everyone children, mom, dad and grandparents!

I also look forward to being able to provide care to Spanish speaking patients in their own language!

Why do you think the Family Health Clinic is important to the local community?

The Family Health Clinic provides so many wonderful resources to our rural communities, it really helps bring in a little bit of everything from medical care, psychological support, and pharm support. I am very excited to add my grain of salt to these great clinics.

What is your specialty?

Women’s health, prenatal care and children’s health! Pregnancy and childhood are such vulnerable times in our lives, and during these times education is essential for us to be able to know how to properly care for ourselves. Prenatal care is enjoyable because pregnancy is such a joyful time! My first pregnancy was actually when I decided I wanted to go into nursing, so prenatal and children’s health are very dear to me.

….and babies who doesn’t love babies

What is your favorite part of being a Nurse Practitioner?

Empowering my patients! I sincerely think education is one of the strongest tools we can have, it helps us understand our health, and take better control and care of ourselves. I look forward to being able to help educate my patients and help make their priorities, mine.

Is there anything else you want to share about yourself? (Hobbies, family life, etc.)

I am married and have two wonderful little boys. We love to travel and go on family adventures, as well as enjoy the outdoors. I love arts and crafts as well as reading.
